For my fifth piece of evidence, I chose to write a case study on one individual student in the Ocean Tides program. The case study describes medical history, present behavioral and medical needs, current medications, intervention approaches, a description of present situation, and the DSM-IV diagnoses. When working with this specific population, I thought it would be helpful in understanding the student's previous history and how it affects his present situation. As can be seen by this case study, there is many medical occurrences that can be useful in explaining the student's present behavior. This was additionally useful in my approach of how I mentored the student.
To complete this case study, I visited the student's past files to understand his medical history. I spoke with staff about their impressions of the student and how to best be a help and a positive mentor in his life. I also spoke with the clinical psychologist on how to approach the student's specific behavioral needs and ADHD. Lastly, I worked individually with the student every day to mentor him, help him with his schoolwork, and listen to any issues he may have present. I learned how useful a case study can be in understanding underlying history that is really crucial to helping the student do well. I was able to use my strengths such as my listening and counseling skills in creating a comfortable environment for the student to thrive in.
