Objective #2:
Learn and understand about ADHD, and how to work with children who have this behavioral disorder.
Activities/Resources:
· Observe students conduct in classroom setting and with peers.
· Talk with psychologist about behaviors and effective techniques in dealing with ADHD.
· Read and do research on ADHD symptoms, cause, diagnosis, and medications.
Evidence:
· Create a reference guide on ADHD characteristics and include a specific confidential case along with my observations.
In my first week at Ocean Tides I came to spend much of my time with one particular student who had ADHD. Further on in my internship another student came into the program who had confided in me of his dealings with the disorder. I thought it would be very useful to understand ADHD more and learn how to best be there for these kids in the classroom. I had very little prior knowledge of ADHD and the influence it has on a child's learning ability. Therefore, I thought this evidence would be very interesting and beneficial to do.
To complete this reference guide I wrote, I did background reading and research on ADHD characteristics. I also observed and spent time with the students who has this disorder. From my observations, I could tell how much ADHD can really be a barrier in comprehending learning material. In those students I saw an array of behaviors from immaturity, lack of impulse control, to inattention, and lots of daydreaming in class. I had to learn to be consistent with them in their schoolwork and become familiar with their behaviors. I really needed to use my observation skills to be able to complete this reference guide.
