Objective #1:
Develop skills for dealing with this specific population.
Activities/Resources:
- Observe the boys in and out of the classroom setting
- Make note of teacher's dealings with the students.
- Read at least one student's file about background to be included.
Evidence:
Include in my portfolio a list of suggestions with confidential case when dealing with at risk students.
For my first objective, I wanted to write a list of suggestions with specific examples in how to deal with at risk students. When working with these students it can be a challenging environment with anger issues and difficult behaviors. I wrote of three separate instances that I find to be most prominently challenging in the program including inappropriate behaviors, anger outbursts, and school lessons. I was able to relate much of the anger problems to previous psychology reading topics in classes. However, reading about it in a textbook is much different when you have to apply it firsthand.
Through my whole internship experience, I kept very observant of the behaviors of the boys in and out of the school setting. I also wanted to see how the teachers handle difficult situations when they present themselves. Through observing I was able to become familiar with the behaviors this population normally presents. I learned that even though these kids can be challenging and have quick tempers, they need a more stable environment so they can feel comfortable and succeed. My listening skills definitely helped me throughout this experience because most of the time the boys just needed someone to listen to them. This objective also helped me to stretch outside my normal boundaries, which allowed me to grow as a person.
